 Make
sure the wood grains match on a piece. Don't forget to check dining room
table leaves.
The finish should be smooth, without bumps or an "orange peel" effect.
Corner blocks at the joints of chairs and tables increase sturdiness and
durability.
Joints should be tight and a piece should not sway or creak when you have a
seat or pressure is applied.
Doors and drawers on case pieces should be uniform and fit without gaps.
Drawers should slide in and out smoothly with a center guide for easy
handling and a "stop" to prevent the drawer from falling out.
Drawers with dovetail joints are best, but tongue-and-groove joints are
acceptable.
The inside of the drawer should be smoothly finished to prevent snags in
clothing.
Drawers with "dust proofing", a horizontal board that prevents dust from
collecting in inside, are desirable.
Remember to consider the back of the piece of furniture. If it will be seen,
it needs to have an attractive back. More
