Open Concept Design
Identify design boundaries while enjoying the best of open design concept. As
open concepts continue to gain momentum, the value of creating visual transition
from one room to the next increases in importance. By creating visual barriers
to distinguish boundaries between one space and another, we are then able to
enjoy a cozier, more intimate home setting, while maintaining the best of the
open concept look and feel. Decorating

VERTICAL
DISPLAY
Curtains
and draperies come in three standard lengths: 1) to the sill; 2) to just
below the sill; and 3) to the floor. One alternative, with a luxurious
effect, is extra-long draperies that form deep folds at the floor or flare
like the base of a column.
Unless there is something in the way, like furniture or fixtures, draperies
usually look best at floor length. Large windows are especially well suited
for heavier, floor-length curtains, while lighter, sill-length curtains are
usually the better choice in kitchens and baths.
Draperies and curtains can create both vertical and curved lines in a room.
Tight tieback curtains form diagonals, while valances with ruffles or
cascades add curves to the decor. If you already have a lot of curved lines
in the room, you will most likely want to avoid using curvy treatments.
If a window affords a good view, avoid treatments with distracting patterns
that may detract from the view.
Ornate treatments (valances, cornices, tiebacks, shirred Austrian shades)
work better in traditional settings, though a small room can be overwhelmed
if the treatment is too elaborate. In a period setting, research the styles
of the time and decide how authentic you want to be.
Simplicity best suits contemporary decors. Look to plain or textured fabric,
patterns that are clearly contemporary (though Oriental is sometimes
acceptable), and options like Roman shades, blinds or larger shutter panels.
In country settings, simple cotton or textured fabrics, cafe curtains or
wood shutters work well with more rustic furniture styles, while more formal
French Provincial or Colonial furniture generally calls for the more
traditional treatments.
An eclectic room should have window treatments that go with the style most
emphasized. For example, if the room is 2/3 contemporary and 1/3
traditional, the window treatments should be more modern.
